| Home | Lawn Aeration What is lawn aeration?
Lawn aeration is the process of opening the soil up to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate deep into the soil. Why should I aerate my lawn? It is important to aerate your lawn in order to allow nutrients, such as fertilizer, to be absorbed deeper into the soil than if simply applied to the surface. If you have picnics or heavy traffic on your lawn, it may be wise to aerate your lawn to simply reduce compaction of the soil. When the lawn is used on a regular basis, the soil will begin to compact. When the soil compacts, it begins to crush the air pockets that are found throughout the soil. The soil being compact will mean that nutrients, air, and water are not absorbed as readily. Aeration is also a good way to promote root growth in the lawn and make it healthy. How is aeration performed? Core aeration is performed by using a machine that travels across your lawn and pulls small plugs of grass and soil out the lawn and deposits them on top of the ground for further decomposition. When should aeration be done? Aeration should be perfomed while the lawn is actively growing. The best times to do this is in the spring and fall of the year. For the best results, aerate before applying fertilizer. This will allow the fertilizer to penetrate deep into soil and stimulate root growth, making for a healthier lawn. |
